Introduction  

Saul was the first king of Israel. He was the people’s choice, but he did not have a heart for God. Because of his direct disobedience to God, the LORD rejected him as king. The LORD’s next choice for king was David. He instructed the prophet Samuel to anoint David to sit upon the throne of Israel. When David had first served Saul, everything seemed quite promising for David. He was called to serve the king, he killed the Philistine champion, and he established a reputation as a great warrior. Soon Saul became jealous and sought to kill David. This persecution continued for some fifteen years, but it was not a period of wasted time. The LORD was teaching a shepherd boy to become a wise king. Moreover, it is the LORD’s way to humble His servants before He places them in a position to serve Him. Humbled servants depend upon the Lord. And, humbled servants glorify God in all that they do. This period of “anointed waiting” was a most important time in David’s life!  

God’s covenant with David promised that his seed would reign as an almighty King forever. The Seed of the woman would sit upon the throne of David and rule His world. David was a type of Christ. Both were anointed by God to be kings. Both defeated giants at the beginning of their ministries. Both experienced a successful ministry only to be persecuted and rejected. David suffered for a time, but Jesus suffered eternally in the place of all who would be brought to salvation. David was eventually exalted to the throne, and that exaltation is coming for Jesus Christ too. David was not a perfect man, but his life was a type of the perfect life of Christ.  

The life of David teaches many lessons for us today. Learn from his life – and always remember how his life is a prelude to the amazing Kingdom of God. Jesus Christ is indeed coming again as the King of kings, and Lord of lords. Even so, come Lord Jesus!

A Study Suggestion  

The study of any biblical character is a developing story. When looking at a particular passage always read the context – both before and after the passage. The character is either progressing or regressing in living before God. The context always reveals the changes. It is insightful to observe truth and helpful in making truth-applications to your own life.
