Overview and Study Notes
Genesis is the story of beginnings. Genesis reveals the beginning of the Creation (Genesis 1), the beginning of human history (Genesis 2-11), and the beginning of the nation of Israel (Genesis 12-50). The story of mankind (Genesis 1-11) is over a 2000 year period of time. The story of the nation Israel, revealed in the rest of the Old Testament (Genesis 12 – Malachi), is also over a 2000 year period of time. The whole of the Old Testament reveals the divine purpose. God is making Himself known to mankind – summing up this wondrous story in the person and work of His Son as Savior and King. The story is designed to glorify God.
Abraham plays a key role in the divine purpose. God’s beginning revelation of this purpose is in Genesis 3:15. Here the seed/man of the woman/Eve is promised destroy the rebellion caused by Satan. Abraham was not that seed/man, but the seed promise would be fulfilled in him. God would make a nation out of Abraham – from which the King of kings would come. Abraham was also important because he affirmed justification by faith (Genesis 15:6) in the coming Savior-King. So the life of Abraham reveals most important developments in the progressive revelation of salvation and kingdom.

A Study Suggestion
The study of any biblical character is a developing story. When looking at a particular passage always read the context – both before and after the passage. The character is either progressing or regressing in living before God. The context always reveals the changes. It is insightful to observe truth – and helpful when making truth-application to your own life.
